Prithviraj Sukumaran’s upcoming movie ‘Jana Gana Mana’ has turned a heated topic of discussion with the release of its trailer. In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Prithviraj opened up about the movie which marks his collaboration with actor Suraj Venjaramoodu after the superhit film ‘Driving Licence’.
“We produced ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as an entertainer. Talking about the dialogue in the trailer, I would like to clarify that I won’t produce a movie by investing crores only to declare a political stance. Dialogues delivered by a character should not be misinterpreted as the film’s politics. In my view, this is not a political film. But I think it is a social film”.
The trailer of the movie is very unique. Usually, a trailer is produced by combining scenes of the movie. But director Dijo and writer Sharis wanted to produce a different trailer. When you watch the movie, you won’t see the scenes featured in the trailer. It is a continuation of the movie. We shot that scenes after completing the schedule of the movie. I found it a fresh idea, he added.
Birth of ‘Jana Gana Mana’
Prithviraj accepted the project while shooting for ‘Aadujeevitham’ in Jordan. One day, he got a call from director Dijo and he narrated the story to him.
“I was thrilled when Dijo briefed the story over the phone. I found time to listen to the script after returning to Kerala. We started the shooting of the movie when the film industry was struggling to revive from the pandemic. It was impossible to produce the movie in a small canvas. I planned to complete the project before starting the second schedule of ‘Aadujeevitham’. But there were many obstacles. But I’m glad that the movie is heading for a theatrical release when the Malayalam film industry is making a strong comeback in the post-covid period,” the actor hoped.
Chemistry with Suraj Venjaramoodu
The whole credit of the chemistry between the characters goes to the script writer and director. We imagine a character as portrayed in the script. Suraj is playing the role of ACP Sajan Kumar in ‘Jana Gana Mana’. Compared to ‘Driving Licence’, our characters in this movie are very different.
As a producer
When I join a movie as an actor, I have many limitations. But while taking up the roles of an actor and producer in a movie, I can contribute my maximum. I won’t produce movies to make money. As an actor, I am making money. But as a producer, I only focus to produce the best movies.
Movie with Mammootty
Once, we have planned a movie with Mammootty. But it didn't work. I hope we will be able to resume the project. When I planned 'Lucifer', I wanted Mohanlal to play the lead role. Murali Gopy wrote the script imagining Mohanlal to be Stephen Nedumpally. Age difference between Lalettan and myself created the characters for 'Bro Daddy'.
‘Aadujeevitham’
Director Blessy told me about the project in 2009 at the location of ‘Pokkiri Raja’. I have been carrying the character of Najeeb for 13 years. I had a huge physical transformation for the character. I never took such physical effort for any other movie. I think an opportunity for such a character and hard work will get only once in life. This will be my last ‘Aadujeevitham’,” Prithviraj concluded.
