"My family won't spend this much money trusting me.."
When Director Ranjith Sankar completed the script of the movie Kamala, he texted to Aju Varghese “Time has come for you to become a hero, I have completed the script” Aju Varghese, who played only minor characters in Ranjith’s movie till then could not believe his eyes and repeatedly went through the text. He called him back to know what the director had in his mind. Aju Varghese who wasn’t mentally prepared to take the big task, asked him the reason for choosing him as the hero. But he was not quite prepared to take up the hero’s role.
After prolonged conversation, the director was able to clear all his doubts and boosted his confidence. Aju Varghese finally agreed to sign up for the role.
Let us hear more from the director Ranjith Sankar about his new movie
Ranjith Sankar: After Pretham 2, I was thinking about my next project. That’s when Kamala’s thread came into my mind. Kamala was in my mind even before my first picture 'Passenger'. Then the name was not Kamala of course. But it did not materialize because of many reasons. I thought the hero should be played by a new face than an established star. I believe that the role is not suitable for a popular star.
The movie requires an actor who is not noted for playing heroic characters. I juxtaposed Aju with the character and I felt he was the right person to do the role
Again I thought that an unfamiliar actress should play the complex role of the heroine.
Even after taking a decision on hero and location finding the right actress was the challenge. If I choose a total greenhorn she might not be able to do justice to the character.
It was a time when the national awards were declared. When I watched the movie that was awarded the best script, I was in fact attracted by the actress’ performance. Rohini Sharma was just the girl I wanted, for I knew she would further 'enhance the beauty' of my movie.
She did not know Malayalam and I feared that her lip movement could create a big issue for the movie.
Aju Varghese on becoming hero for the first time
Aju Varghese: I’m not that kind of person who has great interest in playing heroic roles. Because I know the hardships to play a heroic character and I very well know my limitations as an actor.
I do not have any thrill but I consider it as a great honour. Ranjith Shankar had messaged me during the hustle and bustle of the work of the movie Love Action Drama.
When I got the message I thought it was for the production side. The first doubt that came to my mind was whether I could recover the money spent on the movie.
I told him that even my family would not spend that much amount trusting me for these activities. Though he did listen to my concerns, the producer was not ready for a second thought. When he said that he was not going to revoke his decision I felt confident.
Ranjith Sankar: The movie depicts the theme of love, lust and passion. It was decided that three trailers should be released before the movie hits the theatres.
The trailers have hinted the mysteries of the movie. Before the movie was released, it was decided that three different types of trailers should be released before the movie hits the theatre. Although the story of Kamala is fictional, Character Zafar played by Aju Varghese is modelled on a real character well known to me.
Aju shares his experience on the movie’s location
Aju Varghese: Kamala is the output of Ranjith’s bold decision. I don’t normally listen to the complete story especially when I’m going to work with a reliable team. It’s just like taking unwanted burdens.
Same thing happened with Hellen, which is currently running in theatres. I tried to understand the scenes instead of whole story. The shooting of Kamala was held in the beautiful Athirapally Water Falls. It was a great pleasure to work with Rajendran sir of Tamil industry once again.
Scriptwriting, Direction, Production… Is Ranjith Sankar spreading his wings on Cinema’s every field
Ranjith Sankar: When I began 10 years ago, I only wished for doing one cinema. But later I was lucky to get an opportunity to work with number of movies.
Have you turned away from comic roles…Is Aju Varghese becoming serious?
I did not pre-plan my roles for Helen and Kamala. I was just planted in those serious roles by the directors and scrip writers.
I’m happy that some of the directors are ready to give me serious roles while I continue to play comic characters. Being able to play different roles opens a huge possibility to an actor.
My next movies that are gearing up for the rolling are Sajan Bakery since 1962 and Minal Murali. Malayalam cinema is definitely changing. Recent movies with women centric themes have been hitting box office in recent times. Uyare, Kamala and Helen are doing well in the box office. I pray for cinemas which give good returns to the producer.
