Vegetable prices soar in state; beans at Rs 90, potato at Rs 65
Kozhikode: Vegetable prices are skyrocketing like never before in the state. Price of beans, tomato, chilli, carrot, onion, bitter guard and lemon have crossed the Rs 60 mark. It is observed that summer and marriage season have fuelled the price hike.
The decline in import of vegetables from Tamil Nadu has also added to the hike of prices. Vegetable production in Tamil Nadu decreased due to the shortage of summer rains in the state.
Price of local vegetables is higher than those imported from other states. Tomato produced in Kerala is priced above Rs 80 per kg. Price of horticorp vegetables are also similar to those in the common markets.
One kilo gram lemon costs Rs 170 in the market. One lemon costs between Rs 7 and Rs 10. Since the price increased, traders have stopped selling vegetable kits. Price of fruits also have gone up due to the Ramadan season.
