Malappuram: When Ramzan is round the corner, the price of essential commodities including vegetables, rice, fruits, fish and chicken is skyrocketing day by day. With this, people will have a tough time to make both ends meet.
Price of rice increased by Rs 2 and prices of most of the other grocery items rose by Rs 10 to Rs 20.
There is huge demand for lemon from the beginning of the summer season. As the demand rose, price of lemon started to increase day by day. At present, lemon costs between Rs 80 and Rs 100 for a kilo. A month ago, the price was Rs 60 per kilo.
According to vendors, the fall in production and rise in demand led to the price hike.
As price of essential commodities soared, price of vegetables kept skyrocketing like last months. A kilo of tomato costs between Rs 35 and Rs 40 and chilli prices start from Rs 50 to Rs 60. Whereas, carrot was sold at Rs 40 to Rs 50 and peas cost between Rs 30 and Rs 40.
Ginger prices also rose in the public market. It is sold at Rs 130-150. In April, Ginger was priced at Rs 60-70 per kilo.
With the summer season and Ramzan fasting, the fruit market witnessed incessant rise in price of fruits. Pineapple, banana, apple, grapes and anar became too costly in the market. One month back, four pineapples were sold at Rs 50. But at present, one pineapple costs Rs 70.
At the same time, banana prices also rose to Rs 50 from Rs 30 within a month.
Apple prices rose to Rs 160 per kilo and grapes costs between Rs 90 and Rs 100. Anar, which have great demand are being sold at the price between Rs 80 and Rs 100.
