Kottarakkara: The price of lemon is skyrocketing with the ongoing summer. One kilo of lemon that had costed Rs 60 is now priced at Rs 160. Also the cost of lemon juice has increased to Rs 20 from Rs 10.
Meanwhile, the look and taste of lemon juice has changed. There is no production of lemon in the state. Mostly, lemon reaches Kerala from Puliangudi, Madurai and Rajamudi. Also lemon is imported from Andhra Pradesh.
The high demand of lemon is attributed to summer season and the marriage season. The lemon used in marriages known as the ‘Kalyananaranga’ is not available in the market. Hence the common lemon is brought for marriage functions too.
Puliangudi lemons are the best for lemon juice. However, the common lemon juice is almost unavailable now. Sweet soda lemon juice costs Rs 20 while salty soda lemon juice costs Rs 18. Varieties like ginger lemon, sharbat lemon, lemon toddy, lemon naruneendi are also available in market. Also the fame Kulukki sharbat has different varieties of lemon juice.
Saji Cheroor’s shop at Thrikkannamangal serves a unique lemon juice named Digital Tincture System or the DTS. It is the soda lemon juice mixed with ginger juice.
Meanwhile, sellers are keeping watch on the lemon that comes from Tamil Nadu as theft has increased. Recently in Ayiroor and Kottarakkara, sacks of lemons were stolen.
Traders are expecting further increase in the price in coming days.
