Kerala to export Nendran banana to Europe
Idukki: The state government has permitted Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) under agriculture department to take measures for exporting Nendran banana to European countries. The project, which aims to find global market for the banana variety, will be implemented under National Centre for Banana Research.
According to reports, VFPCK plans to export 10 tonne Nendran banana to UK in next year for Vishu.
Nendran banana will be cultivated at selected places as per the agriculture export policy. The agriculture department will bear the expenditure for the cultivation in the first phase of the project.
Farmers at Mattathur in Thrissur district are selected to cultivate banana. They began the cultivation for export from June and are cultivating banana as per the directions of VFPCK and Banana Research Centre, assuring quality of the produce.
Harvesting will be carried out in March. After this, procedures for export will be initiated. The banana will be exported to Europe through sea route with the help of an agency in Thiruvananthapuram.
VFPCK said that the farmers have adopted farming methods as per the food safety standards in Europe. These rules will be followed in processing and exporting of banana. VFPCK aims to find market for Kerala’s Nendran banana in Europe with this project.
A special app was developed to monitor various phases of the project from cultivation to marketing.
If the pilot project turns successful, more quantity of banana will be exported to Europe.
It is examined that this will help the banana farmers in Kerala.
Other states are exporting fruits including mango to Europe. Kerala has initiated action to export banana to Europe following this model.
