Customers feel the pinch as vegetable prices soar
Kondotty: Sharp hike in vegetable prices have hit households in the state really hard. The prices of potato, onion, garlic, shallot and drumstick have increased rapidly in the last few days.
The price of one kilogram of drumsticks skyrocketed from Rs 60 to Rs 160. Lack of availability has caused the steep rise in price. The price of onion has also soared after a brief dip. Onion, which used to be sold for Rs 40 per kg last week, now retails for Rs 54 per kg.
The price of potato has also increased sharply. Potato had not experienced the hike when vegetable prices increased earlier. But now, its price has gone up from Rs 26 per kg to Rs 34 per kg.
The prices of beetroot and beans spiked from Rs 40 per kg to Rs 60 per kg. Carrot, which was being sold for Rs 50 per kg is now being sold for Rs 70 per kg.
Price of tomato went up from Rs 22 per kg to Rs 30 kg. Prices of garlic and shallot have also shot up. Garlic now costs Rs 240 per kg while shallot costs Rs 90 per kg.
