BSNL staff face salary delay even after increase in income and low expense
Thrissur: Though the financial condition of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) improved when compared to the previous year, the delay in salary payment continues. After the mass voluntary retirement, the company could save Rs 450 crore in the salary expense.
However, this is not reflected in the case of the remaining staff. They have not received even the salary of July. This is when the central government has directed to pay the salary of employees in August before 26th of this month.
The central government was highlighting the excess staff and the liabilities in this category as the major cause for the financial crisis. After 78,569 employees took voluntary retirement in January, the salary expense reduced by Rs 450 crore and the income rose to Rs 1384 crore in July despite COVID crisis.
There is an increase of Rs 107 crore within a year. This was achieved when BSNL does not have 4G spectrum and it competed with companies having 4G service. The popularity of FTTH connection, the high-speed broadband service, also resulted in the increase in income.
However, none of this reflected in the salary of other staff. Even after the mass voluntary retirement, the salary was paid every month after 15th. About 6000 staff have not been paid for 12 months.
C Santhosh Kumar, the state secretary of the employees union said that they have sent a letter to the BSNL chairman requesting payment of salary for July and August by 26 of this month.
