Thiruvananthapuram : At MBIFL, in his conversation with writer Sreekanth Kottakkal, Director Priyadarshan shared his experiences of being a Cricket player during his College days. He mentioned that Cricket and Cinema, the 2 C’s have always been his passion.
It was an accident during a cricket practice session in college that his eye got seriously injured. The lean period of rest and medicines brought him closer to reading but never distanced him from his passion. The 2 C’s still keep him engaged and happy. 95 movies in 38 years is not a list to be overlooked. Priyadarshan disclosed the lesser known fact that actor Mohan Lal was a national level wrestler and that he has represented the College at the University level.
He attributes his passion for letters to his father who was the University Librarian. His father had a friend circle of well-known writers, who were regular visitors to his home. The Director got the opportunity for direct learning of letters of all genres as he used to eavesdrop the conversations between his father and the writers. In fact it was one of those concepts which he took from writer Keshavadev that helped him to develop the story of the movie, 'Kanchivaram'.
A great admirer of Charlie Chaplin, David Lean, director Bharathan and Tom and Jerry, Priyadarshan believes that cinema is for entertainment and hence his audience should watch his movies by closing their logic. He is a proponent of slapstick humor in Malayalam and believes that his duty as a Director is to make people laugh.
Priyadarshan is full of awe for the new movies as he feels that they bring cinema closer to life. Kumbalangi Nights and Helen are his favorites. He regularly updates and adapts to the new trend and receptiveness.
In his candid talk, Priyadarshan claimed with conviction that his upcoming release ‘ Kunjalimarakkar’ is going to be the best movie that India could be ever proud of, for its technical excellence.
The session titled ‘ Rithubhedangal’ concluded with the Director’s remark that he is hopeful that the future of Malayalam Cinema is going to be splendid.
