Thiruvananthapuram: At MBIFL, in the session on keralites and alcoholism, it was explored that keralites get addicted to anything of their liking. M. Mukundan, the renowned writer in Malayalam opined that Malayalees are extremists towards their likes that they fail to enjoy it -be it sex, politics or religion... There is no mediocrity. He shared his experiences of being troubled by people who visit Mahi for liquor as liquor prices are low at Mahi.
Teacher and Social worker Dr Johns K Mangalam mentioned that women are tortured due to the drinking habits of men. He said that alcoholism is a disease and that alcoholics should be treated on time.
Drinking cannot be controlled or prohibited, said Philippose Padikkal from ‘ For better Spirit Association. ’ There should be awareness programmes to help people understand on how to consume liquor and enjoy it. Instructive guidelines can be provided along with the bottle and awareness programmes could emphasise on cultural drinking.
