Padma Subrahmanyam is world renowned dancer. She was born in 1943 to film director Krishnaswami Subrahmanyam and dancer-musician Meenakshi Subrahmanyam in Chennai.
She has completed graduation in music, post-graduation in ethnomusicology and PhD in dance. She also designed 108 sculptures at the Nataraja temple in Satara in Maharashtra. She has also developed a new form dance ‘Bharata Nrithyam’.
Padma Subrahmanyam has penned a number of books on dance and culture. She has been honoured with many awards including Kalamandalam Fellowship, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Kalidas Samman, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Nehru Award, Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize and Nishagandhi Puraskaram.
