Thiruvananthapuram: The session Why risk life to write? Writing is not the product of the imagination alone. There are people who risk their life to write. Is writing more important than life? moderated by Shireen Quadri had panelists Gabi Martinez, film historian and wildlife conservationist Theodore Bhaskaran and animal lover Janaki Lenin who was represented by her husband Rom due to her ill health.
Speaking first, Gabi said that he did not want to risk his own life while writing a book but his latest book had changed the life of him.
Theodoore Bhaskaran began by telling how he started writing about nature and his dream to become a writer. He first began writing his experience on his travel to Tamil Nadu and described how his interest expanded while writing about birds. Theodore said nature writers are of 2 types, one who tread the path and write about experiences and the other who write scientifically by studying the details of creatures.
Though Rom admitted that his wife Janaki Lenin would have said she would not risk life to write, the portions from her book `My Husband and Other Animals' from which he read about did not support this.
"My relationship with wildlife translated to writing and most of my childhood days were spent outdoors with my professor who strengthened my bond with wildlife," Theodore said.
Accepting that he is part of immense world of nature, Theodore said it is an exciting experience when you go out looking for a rare bird. The session was wrapped up with questions from audience.
