Gandhi Nagar (Kottayam): A youth who remained in coma for three years even after being subjected to surgery twice in private hospitals has been brought back to life by the treatment at Kottayam Medical College.
A 22-year-old man hailing from Thiruvarpu, who was breathing through a hole in the neck, was successfully treated by a team of doctors led by Dr P K Balakrishnan, head of Neurosurgery Department. The hole in the neck was closed through surgery and the respiratory channel was restored to normal. The doctors said that the patient will be discharged in a few days.
The young man was suffering from a balance disorder since he was in Class 10. After a detailed check-up, a problem was found in his spinal cord. A surgery was performed at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and he was cured then. However, the disease came back when the boy was completing his graduation in Kottayam three years ago.
He was put on a ventilator and in ICU for months. But after the surgery was performed, he slipped into a coma. A hole was made in his neck for respiration. A feeding tube was attached for giving him food. However, his condition worsened two weeks ago and he was brought to Kottayam Medical College.
