Kottakkal: Transgender persons can undergo sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in private hospitals free of cost from now on. The government scheme that provides financial assistance to transgender persons for SRS has decided to include private hospitals also.
As the government hospitals have no facilities for performing the SRS, the private hospitals which have the facility are included in the scheme. At present, a financial aid of upto Rs 2 lakh is provided for treatment.
The amount would be granted only when the bill and application is produced after the surgery. Since many persons are unable to find the money before the surgery, it has now been decided to provide funds to the hospitals.
The government allocated Rs 20 lakh for this purpose in the previous financial year and there were 18 beneficiaries who accepted the assistance. The amount is granted after a technical committee headed by the Director of Department of Social Justice scrutinized the applications of deserving persons.
State Transgender Cell Coordinator Syama S. Prabha said that the scheme aims to allocate Rs 40 lakh for providing financial assistance and to allow more transgender persons undergo the surgery. She added that people outside Kerala can apply in the present method.
