Substandard hand sanitizers rule market, consumers suffer skin diseases
Kochi: Amid the coronavirus outbreak, substandard hand sanitizers are widely sold in the state. It is reported that the companies which lack experience in the manufacture of medicines and related products are engaged in the production of such substandard hand sanitizers.
According to reports, most of the substandard sanitizers are being brought from outside Kerala. At present, there is no system to assure the quality of sanitizers available in the market.
At present, over 40 companies which manufacture hand sanitizers are functioning in the state with license. Apart from this, restrictions to collect spirit for the production of sanitizers also led to the growth of illegal companies.
All Kerala Chemists and Druggists Association district president PV Tomy stated that a mechanism should be introduced in government level to ensure quality of the hand sanitizers.
“Action will be taken against hand sanitizer production companies which function without a license and engaged in the over-priced sale,” said district drugs control intelligence wing inspector A Saju.
Allergy among sanitizer users
As the use of hand sanitizers became a daily practice in life, many people are suffering from allergies.
Meanwhile, all sanitizers are not creating allergies to users. There are chances for burning sensation from overconsumption. But such allergies may cause serious skin problems like eczema.
People who suffer from itching and redness on the skin are advised to immediately consult a doctor. It is better to use soap and water to wash hands at the maximum. Hand sanitizers are prescribed only during situations where soap and water are unavailable, said Dr Anuradha Kakkanattu, consultant dermatologist in Aster Medicity.
