Smokers stand high risk if infected with COVID-19
Kochi: World Health Organisation has warned that smokers should be careful to prevent COVID-19 disease. Studies claim that patients with smoking habit will have a reduced immunity to fight the disease. Smoking not only damages the lungs, it also makes it impossible for the body to fight against diseases. Studies also said there is no base to the rumors that nicotine, which is found in tobacco products, will help in fighting the disease.
Dr. Praveen Valsalan, consultant pulmonologist at Kochi Aster Medicity, claims that the contact between the fingers and lips while smoking can lead to the person contracting the disease. Patients with smoking habits will experience wheezing and extensive pneumonia. This could cause the swelling up of the lungs and lead to deterioration of the condition.
It could also cause AR Disrupt syndrome. In this condition, the oxygen that the person breathes will not reach the blood and so the body will experience shortage of oxygen supply. This would mean that the patient will have to be taken to a ventilator.
