Meet this Kochi couple who donated part of liver for parents
Kochi: Inspiring everyone to donate organs, a couple in Kochi donated part of their livers for their parents. 12 years back, Roy Tom, a native of Nilambur, donated a portion of his liver to his father Tomy and brought him back to life. Inspired by that, Roy’s wife Mili also shared her liver with her father Tony from Aster hospital last month.
Roy’s father had nothing but one option, liver transplant surgery to get his life back. Roy was only 22 years old then and had just completed engineering. But he was willing to share his liver with his father.
However, Roy's mother Kunjumol discouraged him saying that she will donate. But in the following tests, her liver mismatched to be shared with. Roy insisted again and did the surgery. “Back then, a liver transplant was not common in Kerala, so my father’s surgery was done from Delhi,” said Roy.
“We are three girls for my parents. My father was diagnosed with liver cancer and the experts said his liver needs to be transplanted quickly. I had no second thoughts to be the donor because I have seen the life of Roy,” said Mili.
Mili added that she decided to marry Roy because he is good at heart. Many relatives had discouraged Roy’s marriage proposal saying that he had no liver.
