Can Leukoplakia lead to cancer? Here is what experts say
Reports state that the number of people affected by cancer is increasing day-by-day.
“White patches seen inside the mouth can be the starting of leukoplakia. Immediate treatment can help in reducing further complications”, a team of doctors from Pushpagiri College of Dental Sciences said during an interview with mathrubhumi.com.
“Leukoplakia is a Latin word. ‘Leuko’ means white and ‘plakia’ means patches. Leukoplakia is the white patches seen inside the mouth. It's not something that can be easily scraped out. This disease is commonly seen among people who use cigarette, E-cigarette, hookah, paan, beedi, hans, gutkha etc. If proper treatment is not taken, it can turn into cancer”, HoD of the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Prof. Dr Omal said.
Dr Ann Treesa Babu spoke about the other potential causatives of this disease. “Leukoplakia is commonly seen as a stage before cancer. This causes extreme pain and a burning sensation in some people. This disease is not only caused due to the usage of tobacco products. Cuts and wounds formed by artificial teeth, braces, and sharp teeth, poor immunity, frequent usage of medicines containing steroids and poor oral hygiene are the other causatives of leukoplakia”, Dr Ann said. She also added that this disease is commonly observed in men above the age of 40.
Studies conducted points out that the chance of being affected by leukoplakia increases with age. Men outnumber women when it comes to the usage of tobacco. This is the reason why its seen more commonly among men.
The preventive to Leukoplakia is to avoid the usage of tobacco products. Immediate treatment must be taken at the very first sign of the disease. Live thoughtfully to not let a deadly disease like cancer take over your life!
