Shawarma lovers… be careful of Mayonnaise
Payyanur: Those who love Shawarma are often troubled by the mayonnaise that is either mixed together or comes along with the meat. Mayonnaise is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. This is the major reason behind food infection caused by Shawarma.
Mayonnaise is created using eggs and garlic. Bacteria will grow in this even if kept refrigerated. Due to this reason, most eateries will not offer Mayonnaise in parcels. The shopkeepers also say that Mayonnaise must be consumed soon after preparation.
On Wednesday, four members of a family from Madakkali in Thrikaripur suffered food infection after consuming Shawarma taken home as parcel from a hotel near Payyanur old bus stand. Based on a complaint, food safety officials conducted raids at several eateries at Payyanur and Perumba.
The officials seized stale food items including meat from a hotel named Tandoori Hut. The officials also found that kitchens of many hotels were unhygienic.
Following this, the officials temporarily banned preparation and sale of Shawarma inside Payyanur corporation limits. The officials took the action after finding that Shawarmas were being prepared and sold in Payyanur without obtaining license.
