Theatres open; wait for surging crowds in days to come
Kozhikode: After a long interval, theatres have restarted reeling of movies. And none other than the evergreen spy master Mr Bond was called in to start the ball rolling! But unfortunately the most expected show at the Crown theatre in Kozhikode couldnt materialise due to technical snags. The fans of Bond had to contend with the other movies that were screened. The hollywood movies Venom and Shang chi were screened much to the delight of the movie enthusiasts.
The response was not that big in most of the theatres. Even after a long wait to have the big screen experience , not many turned up to watch the first-day first shows. Also, since the machines haven’t been functioning quite for a long time, most of them crashed at odd hours. The theatre owners feel that the lacklustre response might be due to the release of non-Malayalam movies and hopefully expect a good crowd as soon as the Malayalam movies are back in action.
Theatre owners have made it a point to adhere to the covid protocol. Entry is limited to only 50 per cent of the seating capacity of the theatres and that too the fully vaccinated. The staff at the cinemas confessed that they don’t have neither time nor the necessary technical help to scan the vaccination certificates of everyone. But proper and regular fumigation and disinfection are carried out regularly.
After the pandemic outburst, theatres were opened in January but had to close in April this year. The theatre owners have been facing financial difficulties in paying fixed electricity charges, salaries for the projector operator, cleaning staff and security guards and for the fuel for the generator. Also, they had to keep servicing the equipment and machines frequently to avoid damages. Hopefully, they believe that 100 per cent seating will be soon allowed and the difficulties will be part of the memorabilia.
