Thrissur: Kochaniyan Menon (68) and Lakshmi Ammal (67) are overwhelmed by joy celebrating their first wedding anniversary on December 28. In 2019, the duo made national headlines being the first couple to get married in a Govt. Old Age Home in Kerala.

The couple are inmates of Govt. Old age home in Ramavarmapuram here.

Completing one year of togetherness, the grandpa and granny opened about their life as a married couple.

“We are happy here. The government and old age home staff are taking good care of us. This old age home gifted a new life to us and we will continue to live here as a happy couple,” said Lakshmi Ammal.

She expressed her excitement to celebrate her first wedding anniversary with Kochaniyan, the love of her life.

The couple who got united at the old age home got married last year and cherished their 20 years of long love story.

Kochaniyan who got partially paralysed looked confident as he got the support of his wife.

“We are not having any celebration for our wedding anniversary. It’ s not a big deal. After marriage, we visited my mother. She is happy for us. Some people in my family are not ready to accept our marriage. But we are happy in our small world,” said Kochaniyan.

“I’m so happy that Kochaniyan’s mother accepted us. She hugged and blessed me as her daughter-in-law. The meeting with her was really special in my life,” Lakshmi Ammal shared about the happy moment after turning Mrs Kochaniyan.

“We visited Vadakumnathan temple and Koodalmanikyam temple soon after marriage. Though we wished to visit Guruvayur temple, the COVID-19 outbreak shattered our plans. For the first time, we celebrated Onam and all other festivals together this year. But amid the COVID-19 restrictions, we had a low-key celebration,” Ammal added.

“As I suffered a stroke and was partially paralysed a few years ago, I am still having health issues. Now, I got the support of Lakshmi to manage everything,” Kochaniyan revealed about his life after marriage.

“December 28 marks our first wedding anniversary. We miss our old superintendent who took initiative in our wedding. He got transferred to another old age home. If he was not here, we won’t get married. We will be grateful to him,” said Lakshmi Ammal conveying gratitude to former superintendent VG Jayakumar.

“Our minds are united for more than 20 years. The marriage has made our love legal before society. Our age was not a barrier for us to enter wedlock as we got the support of some good-hearted people. We will continue to love and be strong pillars of support to each other,” said the couple with a giggle.
