Kottayam: Spectacular waterlilies spread in a 100 acres. When it blooms this is one of the most beautiful sights one can come across in Ambatukadavu in Panachickadu. People from faraway places visit this wonderful sight for its spectacular beauty.
These lilies blossom in the period of June to November a year. While preparing the land for farming, these plants from root to seed get mixed in the soil. After the reaping when the field is filled with water the waterlily starts to bloom.
But this year, the specialty is in the size of the flowers. The flowers are of unusual large sizes.
A resident of the region, Karinatillam Neelakantan Namboodiri says, “Even earlier there were lilies in here, but that did not have this size, color or beauty. But when lotus farming started in a nearby farm land, waterlilies in the region underwent such a change naturally. May be there is some science behind this. People say there is a chance of pollination between these plants”.
These flowers bloom by ten at night and fall by ten in the morning. Since these flowers have no special use people collect these just out of curiosity. Festive seasons like Onam, Vishu, Vijayadasami etc attracts a large number of people here apart from tourists.
