Muthalamada: Tourists who arrived at Muthalamada railway station as a part of Onam vacation were disappointed as they were not permitted to enter the premises by the station authorities. The corridor at the entry of the station was closed. Even tourists who approached to buy platform tickets and enter the station were reportedly denied.
Muthalamada railway station is one of the favourite destinations of tourists and film-TV serial producers who arrive in Kollengode. The presence of big banyan trees on the sides of the tracks is the major attraction of the station.
According to Palakkad Division authorities, the move is aimed at preventing casualties and damage to property in the station as there have been multiple instances wherein tourists repeatedly swing on the roots of adjoining banyan trees, risking their lives as they could come in contact with electrified lines.
Meanwhile, there are demands from the public seeking to convert Muthalamada into a tourist railway station like that of Ooty and Coonoor. Three trains namely, Thiruvananthapuram-Madurai Amritha Express, Palakkad-Chennai Express, and Palakkad-Tiruchendur Express, pass through Muthalamada station. Of this, only Tiruchendur Express has stoppages here. The train, which departs from Palakkad, will reach Muthalamada at 6.40 a.m. and the return service will arrive at 8.25 p.m. That is, both times are apparently unsuitable for tourists.
