Harpy eagle | Photo: Special arrangement
A rarest of the rare photo of Harpy eagle from the dense rain forests of the mysterious Amazon situated in South America. Pre-eminent biologist and acclaimed Harpy eagle expert Charles Munn graciously shared the picture with Mathrubhumi.com.
A team led by Charles sat patiently opposite a specially erected blind to watch the mighty eagle. The nest was atop a tree that was 70-feet long.
Harpy eagle mother is seen right beside an eaglet that is around one month old. The mother eagle can also be seen feeding the eaglet. The young ones usually fly off after five months from the nest.
Harpy is the heaviest of all eagles in the world. When both wings are spread, they come up to around 8 feet in length. This mighty and magnificent eagle is rare to spot as its habitat is within the depths of the Amazon where sunlight seldom enters.
