Kerala’s thriving tourism industry has added one more feather to its cap as New York Times enlisted the state as one of the 52 must-visit destinations in 2023. NYT has lauded Kerala for its captivating “beaches, backwater lagoons, cuisine and rich cultural traditions”.
The Kerala government’s efforts to provide the village life experience to the tourists by ensuring local participation had a special mention in NYT's report. The development of tourist sites as responsible tourism destinations was also highlighted in the report.
The report noted that the tourists can enjoy paddling through canals guarded by forests, learn weaving of rope from coir, and even palm tree climbing in the state. The report mentions village street art and dance performance at Maravanthuruthu village in Kottayam, and temple festivals such as the Vaikathashtami festival.
