New Delhi: Kerala’s emerging tourism destinations Kumarakom and Beypore were enlisted in the union government’s ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’. These two locations were added into the second edition of the programme after examining the proposals of the state’s tourism department.
Minister for Tourism PA Mohammed Riyas opined that the scheme would help the state to attract more tourists. More tourism projects will be envisaged by focusing adventurous water sports and ‘uru’ (dhow) in Beypore while centering backwaters in Kumarakom, the minister said.
The International Water Festival held in 2021 and 2022 helped Beypore to paddle into the list of Swadesh Darshan 2.0. The water festival led thousands of tourists to the Marina Beach in Beypore and also to Kadalundy, which is an eco tourist spot situated in the locality. Beypore port development is also likely to be achieved easily with the insertion of Beypore in the Swadesh Darshan scheme.
As many as 36 tourist destinations in 19 states in the nation have been included in the Swadesh Darshan 2.0. The union government launched this programme in 2015 to explore the domestic tourism potential of the nation. It has set aside Rs 1,151 crore for this project in the budget of previous year.
