Rio - A dream come true for Jinson
Perambra: Jinson Johnson, the soldier athlete from Chakkittapara village here, has done the his home and parents proud by getting into the Rio Olympics list. He clinched his dream finishing 800 meters in 1:45:98 at the qualifiers at Bengaluru on Monday.
A Junior Commissioned Officer in the army, he is the son of Kulachal Johnson and Shailaja. The parents who were eagerly waiting for the news of their son's qualifiers, learned about his success from the television channels while at Chennai and later got a call from Jinson himself confirming the news. Jinson also made it a point to call his coach from earlier days, Peter Karimbanakuzhy immediately after the qualification.
Peter, the man who molded the talent into a winner, expressed his high hopes for Jinson. Jinson was first noticed when he came third in the District Sports Championship. Peter, former Bank Secretary and the coach at the Chakkittappara Village Sports Academy then picked him up and trained him for a year keeping him at his own home.
Gold medals came home in the 800 meters at National Junior Sports Championship at Vijayawada in 2007 and the 1500 meters at the National School Meet, Kolkata.
His next stop was the Army Sports Academy at Pune under coach Muhammed Kunji after he got inducted into the army as a Junior Commissioned Officer at Hyderabad.
He got a silver in the 800 meters event in the Asian Athletics Meet Championship held at Wuhan in China last year. He also bagged three golds in the Asian Grand prix in Thailand last year.
National Inter State Athletics in China last year bagged him a gold and a silver and the Bengaluru National Athletic meet won him two gold in 800 and 1500 meters respectively.
Even though he was disturbed by injuries due to constant events, he has proved his mettle once again by making a striking comeback through the qualifiers for Rio.
