Veerendra Kumar, a towering political personality
Varanasi: In passing away of M P Veerendra Kumar the nation has lost a towering political personality committed in thought and action to the values of our freedom struggle and socialist movement. He championed these values to strengthen the contemporary mass movements to protect the rights over jal, jungle and jameen.
While guiding the publishing house of Mathrubhumi he established a strong foundation of independent and progressive journalism, which has become a rare commodity in present day mainstream media.
At a personal level he had the quality of establishing instant rapport with poor and struggling masses which in turn earned him their love and respect.
His demise has come as a personal loss to me as I was fortunate enough to forge a friendship based on shared ideals. We first met at the by now historic 2004 World Water Conference organised by him in Plachimada, Perumatty panchayat, Kerala.
In the ensuing coming years he gave me the opportunity to participate in the events organised by Mathrubhumi. These include the 2010 platinum jubilee celebration of Mahatmaji’s visit to Mathrubhumi and later on the occasion of Mathrubhumi’s celebration of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary in 2018.
I pay my heartfelt condolence to Veerendra Kumarji’s wife Usha, son Shreyams Kumar, other family members and his colleagues.
