Sachin talks to Dr Gowri Nambiar about the 'burning experiences' of COVID patients
Dr Gowri Nambiar Sengupta talked about her interaction with the students including foreigners who are living in the isolation centres. She shared her experience as an officer in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with Sachin Tendulkar.
"When I went for visits, the students including foreigners did not treat me like a doctor, but shared their concerns with me as if I were a family member. Many of them wanted to know if they would be cured, they could go home and talk to their mother. All of them were burning experiences. I felt more like a mother than a doctor at those moments," Dr Gowri said.
Then she asked a question to Sachin, "You celebrated your birthday recently and sought blessings from your mother recently."
Sachin intervened and said, "I did not celebrate my birthday this time, but only sought blessings from my mother. I cannot measure my love and respect for my mother. I grew up as a naughty little boy to a cricketer, a family man and a father of two. One of my kids is 22 and the other is 20. When I spent each phase of my life with my mother, I heard many stories from my mother and learnt many things.
Sometimes, parents would not share the challenges they face to their children. They will face it no matter how big they are but would not let their kids know it. I had to live with my uncle and aunt for 4 years. Even when my parents lived in different places in Mumbai, they used to take the bus to reach Shivaji park every day. We didn't have a car then. They did this for 4 years!
I tell my kids for fun that I would give them a car and driver if they could come and go daily for 4 years. When I think about all this now, my respect and love for my mother only multiplies. I am lucky to be part of this loving family. I even wonder how they could do it. Normally no one will do these things. My dad is not with us now, but I feel the same about both of them. I tell my kids about this valuable relationship."
Dr Gowri's next question to Sachin: "You sought blessings of your mother by touching her feet. Maybe all mothers want to get a son like Sachin. Can you tell about your relationship with mother?"
"This is a tough question. I don't know how to express this relation in words. I always touch my mother's feet to seek blessings before going for exams, cricket matches, or long trips. I seek blessings by touching feet of my parents and grandmother whenever anything important happens in my life. It is a regular custom in the family. I value their roles in my growth and that is why I do so," Sachin replied.
