King of birds gets global attention
Looking gorgeous and decorated with inexplicable aesthetic appeal, the Western Tragopan bird in Himachal Pradesh has gained global attention again.
Rarely sighted and shy by nature, the bird has its habitat on the high altitudes of western Himalayas. Few have seen that. The state bird of Himachal, however, was filmed and presented to nature lovers last year when a young lady Munmun Dhalaria made a remarkable documentary after an adventurous trek to the heights and patient waiting. The film depicting the dreamy and emerald landscape and the life around won acclaim.
The Tragopan shot into limelight through this first documentary.
Now captive bred birds of the Tragopan have been reloaded into the wild for the first time by the forest department in Sarahan breeding center near Shimla, making it a laudable achievement of the department. The birds will be monitored by radio collar device.
This is for the second time the birds are getting global attention. The department will go ahead with more captive breeding programmes for a sustainable population.
Presently the status of the bird is vulnerable due to habitat loss. There are villagers and guards who are passionate to protect the species. A film Munmun was also made about the bird.
