2022 was marked by some of the most bizarre and horrific murders Kerala has ever seen. The nature of the murders was gravely concerning, ranging from the back-to-back political killings that took place in Palakkad in April to the human sacrifice that was followed by a string of horrifying killings in October and November. In Kerala, 270 murders and 576 murder attempts were reported up until October, according to the latest crime statistics by the Kerala Police. Here are some of the most shocking murders that occurred in 2022 in God's own country:
SHAN BABU MURDER - January 19, 2022

It was on 17th January that the 19-year-old Shan Babu Joseph was murdered and his body was left abandoned in front of the East police station in Kottayam. His body was discovered when his mother and sister approached the station to file a complaint. Later, it was revealed that the person who murdered Shan was Jomon, a goonda, charged under Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. The police also arrested Ludheesh, the second accused, who was earlier beaten naked by a gang, including Shan. The accused used an auto to kidnap Shan, who was tortured barbarically before being murdered. Police captured Jomon K Jose, Ludheesh, Binu, Sudheesh, and Kiran in connection with the incident.
SDPI LEADER SUBAIR HACKED- April 15, 2022

SDPI activist Subair was hacked to death in Elapully, in Palakkad, on April 15th. A gang that arrived in a car attacked Subair, who was returning from the mosque after Friday prayers. His father, who was accompanying him, was also injured in the incident. Police found that the SDPI leader was murdered in retaliation to the murder of Sanjith, an RSS worker, in November 2021. Palakkad district RSS coordinator Kottekkad Anappara native S Suchithran (32), district ‘karyadarsi’ Elapully native G Girish (41), ‘Mandal karyavahak’ Janeesh (24) were arrested for conspiracy and harbouring offenders.
MURDER OF RSS LEADER SK SRINIVASAN - April 16, 2022

Hours after Subair’s murder, RSS former Saririk Sikshan Pramukh SK Srinivasan was murdered at Melamuri, in Palakkad, on 16th April. Sreenivasan was working in a business unit when a 5-member team on three bikes attacked him. The assailants hacked him using machetes and inflicted several injuries. Around 40 people were included in the list of the culprits who hatched the plan, conspired, and executed the murder. The police said that the accused targeted Srinivasan after failing to kill two other RSS leaders.
MURDER SUICIDE IN MALAPPURAM - May 05, 2022

Mohammed, a father from Malappuram, set his goods autorickshaw on fire after locking his wife and two kids inside near the Kondiparamba area in Malappuram on 5 May. Later, he took his life by setting himself on fire and jumping into a nearby well. While his wife and one child died, his other child was hospitalized with severe burns.
MANORAMA MURDER - August 08, 2022

A 60-year-old housewife, Manorama, was killed by a migrant worker, Adam Ali, hailing from West Bengal, on August 8th. He later dumped her body in a well near her house in the Kesavadasapuram area of Thiruvananthapuram. The body was found after her husband returned home and couldn't find her. Adam Ali used to work for the family. The police found CCTV footage from a neighbouring house that shows Ali dragging Manorama's body and dumping it in the well. Police also found that Rs 50,000 had gone missing from the house. Ali, who absconded after the incident, was nabbed by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from Chennai.
BRUTAL KILLING OF TRIBAL YOUTH IN IDUKKI - October 8, 2022

Ramesh (27), a tribal youth from the Periyakudi region, was brutally murdered by his relative Suresh at Marayoor on October 8. The quarrel over property between the victim and the assailant turned into a fight. The accused, intoxicated at the time, attacked Ramesh with a road. The shocking incident happened when Ramesh was sleeping at his house on Friday at midnight. The assailant thrashed Ramesh's head several times with the rod and heinously disfigured his face by thrusting the rod into his mouth. The accused, who fled the scene after the incident, was nabbed by the police from a nearby forest. He confessed to the crime during interrogation.
HUMAN SACRIFICE CASE- October 11, 2022

On 11 October, the "human sacrifice" case involving the savage assault and death of two women in Kerala came to light. The brutal murder of Roselin(49) and Padmam (52) in a suspected case of "black magic" and "human sacrifice" led to the arrest of three people by the Kerala police, including a couple. Muhammed Shafi alias Rasheed, a habitual criminal, planned the killings after persuading Bhagawal Singh and Laila that killing someone would "please" the goddess and bring them "financial success." Shafi and the couple brutally murdered two women – in separate instances, one in June and the other in September – at the couple’s house at Elanthoor in the southern district of Pathanamthitta. Shafi used promises of money to entice Roselin and Padmam, who were selling lottery tickets for a living. The murders were brought to light after a missing report was filed by Padmam’s relatives.
PANOOR MURDER CASE - October 22, 2022

The 23-year-old Vishnupriya was stabbed to death inside her house on 22nd October in Panoor, Kannur. Her murderer, Shyamjith, was arrested based on the evidence found through social media and phone records of Vishnupriya. She was found dead in a pool of blood with her throat slit at her residence in Vallyayil around noon. To carry out the murder, Shyamjith had created an elaborate plan, and he had even forged the knife by himself. For days, he followed and monitored Vishnupriya, waiting for an opportunity to murder her. The crime was motivated by hatred for Vishnupriya, who dumped Shyamjith after being in a long-term relationship with him.
SHARON MURDER CASE - October 25, 2022

Sharon Raj (23), who passed away on October 25 in Thiruvananthapuram, was discovered to have been poisoned by his lover, Greeshma, for refusing to end the relationship. Sharon had died due to organ failure that happened after consuming a drink offered by Greeshma. She initially denied any wrongdoing and confessed that she had laced his juice with pesticide and committed the crime to get out of the relationship. Greeshma also said Sharon refused to delete her private photos from his phone. The police recorded her arrest after she attempted suicide by drinking disinfectant at the Nedumangad Police station.
DRUG MAFIA MURDERS IN THALASSERY - November 23, 2022

On November 23, 52-year-old Khalid and his 40-year-old brother-in-law, Shameer was hacked to death by a drug mafia gang in the Thalassery area of the Kannur district. Shameer's cousin Shanid (38) was injured in the attack. Shameer's son, Shabeel was beaten up by the same gang the previous day. The gruesome murders took place in the midst of a government campaign against drug abuse and addiction. As revenge for questioning drug activity in the area, the assailants met the victims at the hospital and persuaded them to come outside before stabbing them to death. All three were admitted to the hospital, but only Shanid survived.
