Meet Kerala’s first married gay couple, Nikesh and Sonu
Kochi: The first gay couple in Kerala to get married, Nikesh and Sonu are waiting to legalise their union. They wish to adopt a child and lead a happy life.
Nikesh and Sonu are one of the firsts to openly come out about their homosexuality. They got married at a temple in July 2018 by exchanging rings.
Nikesh and Sonu met through a dating website and later decided to get married. The wedding took place with the wholehearted support of both families. M S Sonu works in InfoPark in Ernakulam while Nikesh is a businessman.
Recalling the first encounter with family about his sexual orientation, Guruvayur native Nikesh said it took much efforts to make his mother understand about it. However, finally she was able to accept him as he is. Also his two elder sisters supported him.
Koothattukulam native Sonu said he came out to his family when they started searching alliances for him. There were small conflicts at home. Family took him to Dr C J John and the doctor helped him make the family understand that it was not a choice but how a person is born. Since then his family is in full support.
“Our rights are being denied which is total injustice. It is high time gay marriages and adoptions are legalised. Sexuality is never a person’s choice. It happens naturally. Society should be made aware of this and once done, everything will be fine, both said.
SC verdict of 2018
In a landmark judgement for the LGBT community in the country, the Supreme Court lifted a colonial-era ban on gay sex on September 2018. It scrapped Section 377 of the IPC, decriminalising consensual gay sex.
