Organ and tissue transplantation: Govt to establish new institute in Kozhikode

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George on Monday informed the Kerala Assembly that the government has decided to establish a new institute for organ and tissue transplantation in the state. The institute will be established near Kozhikode Medical College and a site near Government Leprosy Hospital (Government Dermatology Hospital) has been already identified for the same. A special officer has been appointed for the project, the minister added.

The government has been intervening to make organ transplantation affordable for commoners, she pointed out.

The minister cited data on organ transplantation. At present 2,444 have registered for liver transplantation. There are 51 patients which require transplantation of multiple organs.

The measures to provide medicines at subsidised rates for patients who have undergone transplantation are under progress, she further said.
