Thiruvananthapuram: Artificial pancreas algorithm-powered MiniMed 780G machine, which is a closed-loop insulin pump, finally reached the open market. This electronic device was launched for Type 1 diabetic patients, Type 2 patients with chronic diabetes and pregnant women.

780G is distinct from many other insulin pumps available now. The Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) will help in monitoring real-time glucose levels and adjusts the insulin levels of the patients. The device will reduce the insulin level in the blood if it detects hypoglycaemia (low sugar level) and thus maintain the sugar level of the patient. Similarly, the device pumps insulin into the blood, when it notes hyperglycaemia (high sugar level).

The device which only has a size of a smartphone is connected to the stomach of the patient. The device has a tube and needle through which insulin would be injected into the body. Dr Jyothidev Kesavadev said that the device is in the market since January 18.
