Kottakkal: If COVID-19 patients are treated in a government hospital, they are provided free treatment and food. But if they are admitted to private hospitals, the patients have to pay for even the PPE kit worn by the medical staff. The expense can be from Rs 60,000 to Rs 5 lakh per head.

The number of COVID cases keeps increasing day by day, but only a very few people buy Coronavirus insurance policies. All leading general and health insurance companies have initiated Corona insurance policies as directed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India. The policies offer a coverage of upto Rs 50,000-5 lakh on paying premium ranging from Rs 500-5000.

Corona Rakshak

This is a plan which provides the insured amount completely, if the policyholder is admitted in the hospital for 72 hours. Policies worth Rs 50,000, Rs 1 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh are available. The insurance coverage is valid for different periods ranging from 3 months, 6 months and 9 months.

People aged between 18 and 65 years can take the policy. If the customer is diagnosed with the disease within 15 days of joining, then they are not eligible for benefits.

Corona Kavach

This policy is suitable for individuals and families. Age limit to join is from one day to 65 years. Only the amount spent for treatment will be provided and that too upto Rs 5 lakh maximum. Time limit is similar to Corona Rakshak policy.

Apart from treatment expenses, the cost of medical equipment like PPE kits, in-house treatment and ambulance facility also is offered. The benefit will be available for other related diseases and Ayurveda, Unani and Homeo treatments too.

Ignorance causes trouble

The ignorance of Corona policies is the reason for its low publicity. As the number of patients increase, the policy is essential, said M K Satheesh Babu of Malappuram District Cooperative Bank.
