Leena Theresa Rosario giving out books to people in her locality

Alappuzha: Leena Theresa Rosario, a teacher at Leo XIII LP School in Alappuzha, felt a tinge of pain as she brushed the dust off the books that she stacked up around five years ago. She was sad that there was no one to read the books. Hence, she made a resolution. Leena is now finding happiness by delivering books to houses and by introducing people to the world of reading.

She started the mission by giving away books to her students. A few parents came looking for books after that. With that, Leena’s books started finding their place in reading groups and new homes. As the number of readers increased, the books in her collection were not enough for distribution.

She usually distributes books that are received as contributions. She also buys books from Mathrubhumi books at times. More than a thousand people, including children and the aged, await Leena’s books. After they are done reading, she collects the books and gives them to new readers.

The distribution of books is done as she commutes back and forth from school. Her husband Boney and her mother-in-law Baby support her in the unique mission. Leena has two children, Darwin and Derin.
Leena also opened up about her unforgettable experiences in her mission.

‘One of my young reader’s father was an alcoholic. He used to beat up his wife. One day, I advised him to stop disturbing his son and that their family would be saved only if the boy gets a good education. I also gave him a book to read. He has been an avid reader for the past four years. There are no more fights at their home. It makes me happy to see him reading when I’m on my way back home,’ says Leena.

Leena said that many have tried to help her out financially to purchase more books, but she always declines. She declared that she is happy to receive contributions in the form of books, she added.
