Thrissur: A white jackfruit sapling sprouted from an ordinary jackfruit seed is pulling crowd at Kaiparambu native Jigeesh's house here. The jackfruit sapling has completely white leaves and stems. The family had planted about 20 jackfruit seeds and one of the saplings happened to be fully white.
The jackfruit tree sapling turned white due to a phenomenon of albinism, said Dr Latha, professor at Agricultural Research Station in Mannuthy. This occurs when the plants fails to produce chlorophyll that gives them green colour.
The research wing of the Kerala Agricultural University was contacted to know about the scientific causes behind the rare condition of the jackfruit sapling, said E B Ludheesh, agricultural assistant at Tholoor Krishi Bhavan.
