Coimbatore: As the arrival of jasmine flowers decreased in the market, the price has skyrocketed. Last week, jasmine was sold for Rs 100 per kilogram whereas the price jumped to Rs 3,132 per kilogram on Saturday. The jasmine farmers said that snowfall and unexpected rains have affected the growth of jasmine plants and thereby reduced production.
Jasmine is mainly brought from Sathyamangalam area in Coimbatore. Jasmine is cultivated in various villages in Sathyamangalam taluk. The flowers harvested from here are taken to Mysuru, Bengaluru, Shimoga and Thungur in Karnataka for sale. Jasmine is cultivated in 50,000 acres of land in Sathyamangalam as per statistics.
In order to deal with the price hike, the jasmine sellers have directly brought jasmine buds from Bengaluru for affordable rate. The merchants said that the jasmine buds cost only Rs 100 per kilogram. Only after the buds bloom, the price can be compared with the current market price, they added.
