Tomato price doubles to Rs 60 on poor supply

Pollachi: The price of tomatoes doubled in a week and ten times in a month in Tamil Nadu. Tomatoes in the Kinathukadavu Tomato Market, one of the major tomato markets in Tamil Nadu, were auctioned at Rs 43 per kg in the wholesale market yesterday. The price was Rs 20 last week but now the price in the retail market is around Rs 50 to Rs 60. The reason for the increase in prices is said to be the low supply of tomatoes.

A month before it was only Rs 5 for a kilogram of tomatoes. Because of not getting proper revenue from the tomato cultivation, the farmers had let the cattle graze in the fields. Farmers are now relaxed due to a significant hike in the price. They had to sell the tomatoes for Rs 3 per kg two months back. That loss can be compensated now.

Most of the tomatoes coming to Kerala are from the Kinathukadavu tomato market. Tomatoes are sold from No 10 Muthur, Chikkarampalayam, Chokkannur, Kovodi, Veerappakountanur to Ottanchatram. Tomatoes are also imported from Mysore in Karnataka.
