Gopika and Devika in their farm

Muhamma (Alappuzha): Two sisters have proved that they are excellent not only in studies but also in farming. Gopika and Devika, daughters of Muhamma native Sijumon and Deepa, gained attention by cultivating vegetables on the roadside.

The girls started farming in order to utilise their free time during COVID lockdown. They grew vegetable seeds on the roadside from Muhamma to Thanneermukkam along Vembanad lake shore. They were confident in farming as their parents were already into farming.

Local varieties of tomato, okra, brinjal and bitter gourd were cultivated. Apart from this, the girls also planted cabbage and cauliflower on trial basis. Though they were farming on a small scale, they could harvest more quantity of vegetables than expected.

Gopika is a Plus One student at Government Higher Secondary School in SL Puram and Devika is a class 5 student at ABV HS School in Aryakkara here. Their parents also support them in the initiative.
