Munnar: Attracting tourists, strawberry harvest commenced in Munnar. The fruits cultivated on five-acre land of Horticorp at Munnar-Graham’s Land is ready for harvest. The high-yielding varieties like Nabila and Camarosa brought from Pune are cultivated here.

Nabila and Camarosa saplings start bearing fruits within one and a half months of planting. Harvesting season lasts from March to May. One kilogram of strawberry costs Rs 400. Large size and over sweetness are the major characteristics of these varieties.

The agriculture department had introduced ‘pick and pack’ scheme in Munnar a year ago to allow tourists buy freshly plucked fruits from the farm. Many people visit the farms every day to pluck fresh fruits. The remaining fruits are sold directly through the selling point of Horticorp.
