In previous years, when onion from Maharashtra is not available, the red onion from Karnataka used to hold the price. But this time, onion farming in Karnataka was totally destroyed in rain.

Kozhikode: The price of vegetables is skyrocketing giving a hard time for the people. Onion was sold for Rs 90 per kilogram in many vegetable shops on Wednesday and the price will rise further, the merchants said. The price of shallots also rose to Rs 120 per kilogram while garlic price is at Rs 150. Carrot is priced Rs 90 and drumstick price ranges between Rs 70-80.

The price of onion increased by Rs 40 within 3 weeks. Onion farming was seriously affected by COVID crisis, flood and heavy rain. Now the onion stocked from previous harvest is brought to the markets. The merchants said that the price hike resulted from the shortage of the crops.

During previous years, when onion from Maharashtra is not available, the red onion from Karnataka used to hold the price. But this time, onion farming in Karnataka was totally destroyed in rain. Onion is mainly brought from these two states to Kerala. With this, the price of onion increased.

Apart from this, price of other vegetables also rose. Beetroot is priced Rs 65 while beans and green chilli cost Rs 50 per kilogram. The price of bitter gourd is at Rs 60 and ivy gourd and long beans is at Rs 55. Raw mango costs Rs 80 per kilogram. Vegetables are available for a lower price at Horticorp selling points, but the price is high compared to previous days.
