Palakkad: The state-run Kerala Kerakarshaka Sahakarana Federation Ltd (KERAFED) has informed that the payments from raw coconut procurement through cooperative societies and Vegetables and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) will directly reach the bank accounts of farmers within a week.
The bank details of farmers who contributed for the procurement have been collected.
At present there are around 10 centres across districts like Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur to procure raw coconuts. The harvest happens six times a year and the procurement is planned in proportion to that. The objective of having proportionate procurement is to curb the entry of middlemen.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that authorities concerned have a plan to slash the quantity of the raw coconuts procured through each centre. Apparently, it is aimed at reducing the probable issues due to excess procurement.
The procurement happens only on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every month. As of now, around five tons of coconuts are reaching each centre in a week for procurement. In districts like Malappuram, the quantity of coconut that gets pooled for procurement in a week is 10 tons.
