Chittur: Even as the wholesale prices of coconut prices plummets to Rs 20 per kg, farmers in Palakkad, a region popular for expansive coconut grooves, is in distress as there are no takers.

They are clueless about how to mitigate the crisis and stare at the pile of coconuts lying in the grooves since two weeks. Some coconuts have already started sprouting, which will further reduce prices. Possibility of summer rains and resultant wet climate that will further trigger sprouting put farmers on toes.

Usually, during this season of the year, there will be takers, especially the traders from Tamil Nadu. The rates will be more than Rs 30 per kg. However, this year they have not yet turned up and the rates are around only Rs 20 per kg.

In the district, the most affected coconut farmers are in Meenakshipuram, Moolathara, Perumatty, Vannamada, Gopalapuram and Nallepilly.

This time the farmers got a decent harvest. But they do not have the option to sell it. According to farmers, the high harvest in the other states might have disrupted the market.

Farmers blamed that despite the assurance from the state government, the agricultural department has not yet intervened in a proactive manner. Similarly, the agricultural department has not yet executed the claim that it will be opening procurement centres. The farmers said that model of Tamil Nadu government is something which the state imbibe while procuring the coconuts.
