Lotus and water lily cultivation: 28-yr-old Palakkad woman gets Rs 4,000 for a flower

Palakkad: Palakkad woman Anjali stepped into lotus and water lily cultivation just two years ago as Covid-19 pandemic posed a hurdle to her husband’s income.

The 28-year-old hailing from Chungam in Pirayiri here started off with cultivation on her own rooftop and used social media to find customers.

Interestingly, by now she has cultivation on 20-cent plot and sells varieties that fetch even Rs 4,000 a piece.

Though initial customers were from Kerala, within a short span of time she made customers in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttarakhand.

As of now, she has more than 45 lotus varieties, including the rare sahsradalapathmam, Kaveri and Lakshmy.

According to Anjali, white, yellow varieties have more demand. The prices range from Rs 150 to Rs 4,000. Monthly sales is around 80 to 100 flowers.
