Kani Vellari farm
Kozhikode: With the Vishu festival around the corner, the farmers have started harvesting golden cucumbers or Kani Vellari, one of the major items in the 'Vishu Kani'. These cucumbers are widely cultivated in Mavoor, Peruvayal, Chathamangalam, Chethukadavu, Cherukulathoor, Vellannur, Manjodi and Kuttikattoor areas here.
Usually, the market witness demand for this cucumber three days before Vishu. But the farmers are harvesting it as soon as it turns yellow because it will easily get rotten due to extreme heat, drought and dust. At present, farmers earn Rs 50 per kg.
Though most vegetables and fruits are taken to the state from neighbouring states, these golden cucumbers are grown in Kerala for many years. Wholesale dealers collect these cucumbers from farmers here and sell it in the market during the Vishu season. Seeds from early harvested cucumbers are stored for next year's cultivation.
Last year, the summer rains damaged the entire cucumbers on the farm. Cucumber farmers are relieved that there were no heavy summer rains this time.
