Meenangadi (Wayanad): Farmers are in deep crisis as the ginger price remains low. During the beginning of ginger season last November, the price was only Rs 1100 and later dropped to Rs 800. But in June, the price increased to Rs 2500 giving false hopes to farmers and nosedived within a few days.

At present, the price of old ginger is around Rs 1600 in Wayanad and Rs 1900 in Karnataka. The price of fresh ginger remains at Rs 700, the lowest in recent times. Meanwhile, huge quantity of ginger perished due to diseases and adverse weather conditions. With this, the farmers get very meagre profit when compared to the investment.

Ginger farmers are compelled to sell ginger for a low price since the start of season and suffer huge loss. Majority of them started ginger farming by taking bank loans. Many people started cultivating ginger after several farmers who initiated ginger cultivation got stunning yield and profit. Thousands of people working in ginger cultivation sector are facing the crisis due to the price drop.
