Babu and neighbours moving the 92-kilogram weighing purple yam from the farm
Cherthala (Alappuzha): Though Babu was sure that the purple yam yielded in his land would be larger in size, he never expected it could be so gigantic.
As he could not dig it out alone, Babu sought help of his neighbours to harvest the 92-kilogram weighing purple yam without breaking it into pieces.
The ordinary purple yam was planted in the normal method, but the giant yam grew in a single flowerbed. The giant tuber yielded in the farm of K J Babu at Kanichukulangara in Mararikkulam here.
A fisherman by profession, Babu cultivates different crops during his leisure time. He used only dried leaves and ash as fertilizer for the purple yam.
Recently, a 75-kilogram weighing purple yam was harvested in another farm in Poozhakkal of Alappuzha district.
