NAFED had offered to sell this onion for Rs 50 per kilogram. Horticorp informed that they would take only 25 tonnes on an experimental basis. However, other states purchase this onion on a large scale.
As the government has no hope to control the price by importing onion from foreign countries, onion price hike is likely to continue for a few days. Currently, onion price is between Rs 70-75 per kilogram.
The state government decided to regulate the price of onion by importing after the price touched Rs 100 per kilogram. Civil Supplies, Horticorp and Consumerfed have approached the NAFED for onion.
Supplyco has requested for 1000 tonnes, Horticorp for 500 tonnes and Consumerfed for 300 tonnes. Among them, Horticorp received only 125 tonnes, Supplyco got 50 tonnes and Consumerfed 25 tonnes. With this, the government is planning to stock onions in the coming years to control price hike.
