Pandalam (Pathanamthitta): A young farmer visited Minister for Agriculture V S Sunil Kumar carrying a basket full of organic vegetables to express gratitude for the help provided by his department.
The minister also was excited to meet Jayalakshmi, a Class 10 girl, who came with the vegetables she produced in her garden.
Jayalakshmi and her family visited the minister at his official residence in Thiruvananthapuram to give him the organic vegetables from her farm. Daughter of Kulanada native K S Sanjeev and Polytechnic College teacher Deepthi, Jayalakshmi studies in Class 10 at NSS Girls' High School in Pandalam.
The girl met the minister to express her gratitude as the agriculture department helped her start a kitchen garden in the house yard. Jayalakshmi said that she gets an attractive yield due to the use of vermicompost and organic fertilizers. The minister stated in a Facebook post that he felt really proud listening to the young girl's words.
Jayalakshmi and family also paid a visit to the farm close to the minister's house. Having an interest in agriculture since childhood, Jayalakshmi used to plant seeds of vegetables bought from market and create a kitchen garden. Tuber crops and plantain grew in their compound.
Apart from farming in the house, Jayalakshmi also engaged in further agriculture activities led by Mathrubhumi Seed in her school. The agriculture department also encouraged her. Kulanada Krishi Bhavan provided help to make a rain shelter in her house. With this, Jayalakshmi turned into a successful young farmer.
